Strategic differentiation is the key ingredient in developing an overall communications strategy that will be compelling to the media, and, by extension, to all of a company’s key audiences – customers, business partners, employees, stakeholders and both industry and financial analysts.  The key to this strategic differentiation is focusing on those determinant attributes that clearly set a company apart from the competition.

Determinant attributes are the characteristics that are important to customers, yet distinguish a particular company’s products or services from competing products or services.  By identifying the product or service attributes that customers use to differentiate among competing products or services, it’s possible to learn why customers purchase from one company and not another.  This is what makes the company unique.  Every company has its own unique selling proposition (or “unique selling point” or “USP”) or it will have a hard time staying in business.

Making a List …

A list of a company’s determinant attributes may look like this:

• Strong partners
• Wide distribution network
• Strong after sales support

• Products are good value for price

From this list, it is then extremely important to determine how strongly the differentiation is on each attribute as compared to the competition.  This discussion more than likely will result in a fine-tuning of the USP — a reordering of the list based on these comparable strengths.

For example, the company may be seen as a technical innovator with a slight advantage over its competitors when it comes to technology, but with a clear and overwhelming advantage over all of the competition when it comes to after sales support.  The other attribute that sets it apart from its competition is pricing, which for a technological innovator is perceived to be a good value, rather than premium pricing.  The remaining attributes do not resonate strongly with the company’s key audiences, so they are then ranked in decreasing order of importance based on this analysis.

… And Checking It Twice

The reordered list of determinant attributes would then look this:

• Technological innovator
• Strong after sales support
• Products are good value for price
• Strong partners
• Wide distribution network
• Wide range of products

Once the determinant attributes have been quantified and qualified in this manner, the foundation has been laid to begin leveraging them as part of a strategic communications program, particularly in developing key messages.  However, this list of attributes needs to be revisited regularly to take into account new company developments, competitive pressures and macro economic trends.

Growthink Survey Says iPhone is the Preferred Smartphone for Entrepreneurs

Growthink, a leading business planning firm and middle market investment bank, has released its 2012 findings on which smartphone brands are used most by entrepreneurs. The list includes some of the most known — and similarly most assumed — smartphones being used by entrepreneurs such as Blackberry and iPhone, but the list also shows a high number of entrepreneurs still using flip phones, about 21% across the country.

Even given this high percentage of flip phone entrepreneurial users, the iPhone beats out all other listed smartphones with a bulk of the overall market in the country coming in at a user percentage of a little under 30%.

Specific findings of Growthink’s poll were as follows:

• iPhone: 29.0%
• Android: 23.2%
• Blackberry: 20.3%
• Flip phone: 21.7%
• Other: 5.8%

The Growthink poll can be highly useful to public relations and marketing companies, as well as freelancers and consultants in understanding what services to offer to small business owners when approaching them to offer social media, SMS, and other technology-driven services.
